Greywalls Hotel & Chez Roux, Muirfield, East Lothian

The hotel

Greywalls Hotel & Chez Roux is one of Scotland’s great golf hotels — a 23-bedroom Edwardian country house designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1901 and set on the edge of Muirfield championship golf course in East Lothian. Looking out over the 9th and 18th greens, with views across to the Firth of Forth, it has earned a long-standing reputation as a golfer’s haven. The interiors retain the original charm and character that Lutyens intended for his ‘dignified holiday home’, and the hotel is renowned for the quality of its food and service. The walled gardens — attributed to Gertrude Jekyll — are home to hard and grass tennis courts, a croquet lawn and a putting green.

The golf

For a Scotland golf break in East Lothian, Greywalls is unrivalled for proximity and atmosphere. Muirfield itself is effectively in the garden, while Gullane, North Berwick and Archerfield are all nearby, putting some of the finest links golf in the world within a short drive. Edinburgh is around forty minutes away, offering a full programme of evening options for those who want to combine city culture with coastal links golf.

Good to know

With only 23 bedrooms, Greywalls offers an intimacy and personalised service that larger resort hotels cannot replicate. The celebrated Chez Roux restaurant ensures dining is a highlight of the stay, not an afterthought. For golfers who value character, history and access to world-class links over spa facilities and resort amenities, this is as good as Scottish golf hospitality gets.
